Much appreciated and adds a lot of clarity to my own understanding of this issue.Joe G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08465121555213196304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21219785.post-21233423115985506522009-07-14T13:52:12.552-04:002009-07-14T13:52:12.552-04:00Thanks for sharing this Valerie. I was raised in a context similar to the minister you interviewed, where this type of knowledge and inquiry was encouraged. I do agree we are all schmucks. However, I've yet to find a better way than Jesus and seek to find better ways to emulate Him in my life. Thanks to all non-religious for helping me sharpen my understanding.Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16452377708525378827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21219785.post-43527194898398933052009-07-07T10:10:57.058-04:002009-07-07T10:10:57.058-04:00How refreshing it must be to interview a Christian...How refreshing it must be to interview a Christian who, despite his faith, can still maintain serious intellectual honesty and approach a subject with the rose-colored glasses completely off. He backs up his theories with actual historical facts (I assume, I didn't verify), and lets those facts and evidence lead him to a conclusion instead of the other way around. Very informative and enjoyable read.Brian_Ehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02867378625968899480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21219785.post-56326517020503673222009-07-06T22:33:09.301-04:002009-07-06T22:33:09.301-04:00I liked that last line, too. Kind of sums it up.
In my study I have a Hatian carving of 8 people in a canoe --all gripping the sides without paddles, being carried wherever it is going, watching the world coming at them and looking like they just want to stay alive. I think of it as metaphor for the human race.Valerie Taricohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16012585215311378948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21219785.post-68876098356342389772009-07-06T21:13:01.937-04:002009-07-06T21:13:01.937-04:00Thanks Valerie,

Then, too, I think such a comparison clearly shows how little those labeling themselves "Christian" actually know about the diversity of thought that makes up the modern Christianities.

Most often, those calling themselves "Christian" think that their version of Christianity is the one true Christianity that leads to salvation. At the same time they will identify other Christianities which notably lead one to hell. Yet, when they confront non-believers in a forum such as this, they actually undertake the Herculean task of simultaneously distancing themselves from the lesser Christianities while wrapping themselves in the security blanket of numbers by lumping themselves in with anything and everything sporting a "Christian" nametag, theological friend and theological foe alike,

I especially liked the last statement,

The reality is that we are all schmucks trying to muddle through as best we can.

I wholeheartedly agree.Russhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15316459700934662467noreply@blogger.com
