Quote of the Day, From My Wife

As we drove past a church having their service yesterday she made me laugh when she said:
Looks like they can't remember how to be good and need to be reminded every week. Some of us are smarter than that.

Lvka, how about missing boring sermons, pseudpsychology, guilt tripping, wasting time and most importantly having to part with some of her hard-earned money!

Yeah, she is missing the same experience Eutychus had when Paul bored him to death with a sermon.

If that is all you and your wife think church is then it's little wonder you left the faith...

Wes,

Other than a localized social support group with ritual marriage and burial services (paid for, by the way), churches have little to nothing else to offer.

Wes once again shows himself to be the humorless one. Why, it's a joke son, a joke.

Yet there is some truth in it. Cut out every time your preacher uses the words "you ought" or "you should" or "you must" and what is left? Why does your preacher continually have to tell you week after week what you should do?

Don't you already know?

That's what she means and that's why it makes me laugh.

@Lvka... From that video, I think I would "miss" it even if I were actually in that church because I would fall asleep about a minute and half into it... and that video was over 5 minutes long. I can't help but think OMG! people subject themselves to this kind of torture every week?

No oughts? No moral instruction?

We then have something that we can be fully confident in in it's consistency with atheism! :D

You really don't want to go there with the idea that God and moral instruction should be included in the same sentence unless you are saying "God is not moral" then it is okay (and accurate, except for that 3 letter word "God").

These words of wisdom are brought to you by one who has absolutely no morals according to your belief. Atheism is not a delusion like your religion. The sooner the world realizes this the sooner the world will be at peace.

Peace,
Emory

Emory, what I wrote is half jest (and thus in the same spirit that John posted this who noted that some people don't have a sense of humor). The fact is, the problem of morality is indeed a problem for atheism when combined with naturalism or scientism (perhaps even with soft scientism) ever since Hume demonstrated that you can't derive moral oughts from what is.

So it was amusing to see John complaining about ministers instructing how people ought to live.

But I would never suggest that atheists can't be moral. I just don't think that they can derive ethics from what they believe as well as others. But they are still created in the image of God and thus most if not all still have moral intuitions.

Ethics and morality do not require a divine source.
