Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives, and Women Preachers: What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible’s answer to this post’s title is clear and simple; just consider what the Bible Believing Southern Baptist did to all their women professors, and God forbid women preachers! (Thank St. Paul for this bigoted view.)

Now what do good solid Bible believing Fundamental Christians say about our second point on hair (since they printed this tract). So lets see how the majority of the God fearing Bible Believing Christians understand the Godly points behind this essay.

Here’s how the tract written by Dr. Webb opens:

“Doth not nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” 1 Corinth. 11: 14
“The current “craze” of male members of society to wear long hair is not the harmless fad that many assume. It is a planned, calculated trend to break down the manliness of American men. It is developing a “unisex” population of weakness, while it destroys the ruggedness of our men. It degrades , sissifies and victimizes out youth who pattern their hair after the “fairies”, “creeps”, “addicts”, “homos” and “anarchists” of this generation. I am aware that these are strong accusations, but read further. Of course to your present thinking it may just be a style, yet ask yourself a question or two. Does it please God and glorify Jesus Christ No indeed! The Bible calls it shame. Now please check the facts. ….There is not one single proof that Jesus wore long hair. In fact, I believe the facts are clearly jus the opposite.”

Here Dr. Webb goes into historical and Biblical proofs he claims supports the fact that Jesus did not have long hair and plus the Bible condemns long hair on men which makes them effeminate.

SINNER….I am sure this writing will find its way into the hands and under the gaze of many a long haired, unsaved young man. My congratulations to you for reading this far. Forget the hair a moment and consider you first need…salvation.”

The above gives us a clear example that Christianity has been influenced by bigots and flat out nuts from the Apostle Paul to the author of this Gospel tract; Evangelist Dr. Hal Webb.

Well, ... unfortunately for their view Jesus did wear long hair and beard. So did the Apostles, and so do the Jews and Arabs until this day. The same goes for Christian priests, bishops and monastics (at least in the East). [And apropos beard, why don't they also follow St. Paul's advice as regards to men having to wear beards? -- unlike those clean-shaven WASPs we see everywhere?]. What St. Paul had in mind in 1st Corinthians 11:14 is effeminate men who wore long hair and no beard.

Uh, how do you know this, lvka? I don't recall these qualifiers in Corinthians. Is this a personal revelation? And how do you know how Jesus wore his hair? As far as I know, even though the Bible I had in Sunday school showed Him with long hair and a beard, the original texts are not illustrated. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

In any case, what does the Bible say about middle-aged men with long hair and beards? That's what's really important.

Harry, please provide references supporting this "majority" claim.

I think it remarkable that given his background of legalistic perspective, Paul did well to progress towards being set free to being content in all circumstances. His words of admonition towards these people no doubt were done due to his acute awareness of the prevailing critical religious attitude towards such hairstyles. I'm not sure if his scolding was motivated by a sense of protection to keep them from provoking a judgement against themselves or if it was out of distress due to indoctrinal habits.

Nonetheless, the overall context of Paul's letters indicate a progressive process towards his maturity towards spiritual salvation - being set free from pride into grace. He himself indicates that salvation is a process - a far cry from some who seem to promote salvation as a neat little package contained within a single formulaic prayer.

As far as Dr. Webb's tract: for those looking to maintain their prideful perspectives, it may seem tempting to justify picking a tree from the forest to cling to, but in fact, it just robs one from enjoying the fullness of diversity.

Harry,

What would Paul have thought of the mullet?

Like zilch, I worry about the meaning for middle-aged men, especially those of us who are rapidly losing their ability to choose to have long hair or not!

Since no one had a good diet back then, I guess there was no need for the beer-belly admonition, but I feel secure in believing Paul would have frowned on that, too.

Well, now that I know I am a sissified, degraded, victimized, unisexed fairy who has more in common with homos, creeps, addicts and anarchists, I guess I'll just go buy a bag of dope, hike on down to my local community church and set that sucker ablaze!

Zilch,

Because that was and still is the manner of Torah-abiding Jews. And of (Eastern) Christians. St. Paul himself was a Nazarite (cp. Acts 21:23-27 and 1 Corinthians 9:4-5; 7:7 with Numbers 6). He himself was from among those of the Circumcision, a Pharisee by sect (Philippians 3:5), and walked according to the Law of Moses all his life.

just another godforsaken atheist...

Just because You forsook God doesn't mean that He forsook You.

Thanks Harry but seeing as Dr Webb doesn't make the claim, I'd like to know what sources you have that have enabled you to conclude how the majority of God fearing Bible Believing Christians understand the Godly points behind this essay.

Of course, Harry, we know that Nazarites like Samson were not to cut their hair, while Paul tells them to. Which is it? What pleases God most? Nazarites or Paul's followers?

For your information Jason, “…majority of the God fearing Bible Believing Christians understand the Godly points behind this tract.” is a open ended improvable descriptive term. Since you are not a Fundamentalist Christian who believe they only are God’s elect, you obviously are not one of them.

You see Jason, faith and belief can not be tested or proven (except by God). The “majority” is any group I want to say they are.

Harry H. McCall said...

John, this is systematic theology.

Jews were under the Old Dispensation / Covenant of "Long Hair" while Christians are under the New Covenant or Dispensation of men with short hair cuts.

Please remember, on men God hates long hair and long foreskins!

Harry, this God seems so picky to me. Why should it matter between testaments how we wear our hair? Should women wear hats too? How about play dice games? Dance in mixed company? Wear swim suits that don't completely cover the thigh? Pool anyone?

Wouldn't you think God would have more important things to talk about than what kind of things we can eat, or what kind of fabric we can use for clothes? I mean really, why wasn't there room to unequivocally condemn slavery? Why didn't God unequivocally condemn witch, heretic and honor killings?

Well, oh well, he's God. We shouldn't question his ways, eh?

Hi Harry,

Thanks for clearing that up. Just wanted to know if there was anything factual about your "Christian majority" claim, which obviously there isn't. Since the "majority" can apparently be any group you want it to be, there's no reason to take this post seriously. Keep up the good work.

Harry H. McCall said...

Jason, I am a born again Christian who is doing God's will and I am also one of the majority doing the work of Jesus.

Jesus has blessed me with an insider's knowledge and your dark heart under Satanic influence rejects it.

Jason, get right with Jesus and he'll turn the light of salvation in your heart. Until then, you'll wonder in darkness!

May God have piety on your lost soul.

lvka- you still haven't answered my question: how do you know that Paul was talking about "effeminate men with long hair and no beards" in Corinthians 11:14? I just reread Corinthians, and for the life of me, I can't see how you can squeeze that meaning out of it. So if Jesus had long hair, was it a "shame unto him" too? I'm guessing that both Paul and Jesus had crew cuts.

And as far as being "godforsaken" goes, that was just a joke. I'm just as "godforsaken" as I am "santaforsaken".

The Blogger Formerly Known As Lvka said...

I've answered it simply: either Paul is a complete schizo, or it's what I say (Bible references didn't help?).

just a joke

I know; I just like to be serious.

Sorry, lvka, your "answer" is merely an unsupported assertion; and no, the Bible references didn't help. Not that I blame you: one of the biggest errors Christians often make, in my humble opinion, is to assume that there is some clear, unambiguous message to be gleaned from the Bible, and that they (or their church, or their favorite apologist) has somehow got an inside track to the "true" meaning of Scripture.

More objectively viewed, the Bible is a hodgepodge of history, myth, and competing religious views, more a compendium that a treatise; and the fact that Christians are still fighting about what the "true" meaning of the Bible is, is witness to its ambiguity. In my humble satanic, I mean humanistic, opinion, of course.

And I like to be serious too, occasionally.

By the way: compliments on your good English. I bet you do German too, and maybe a bit of Hungarian? Drinks are on me if you're ever over this way.

cheers from overcast Vienna, zilch
