To read the argument that religion offers humans an additional and unnecessary reason for violence see Hector Avalos' book.
Well, D'Souza obviously won that debate. All Shermer had were one liners.
Entertaining debate, but didn't move anyone forward. Comparing whose got crazier dictators? Please! That discussion always misses the point. It's not non-god vs. god, it's freethinking vs. dogma. People that are fanatic to the dogma of a political system are NOT on any higher ground than those of religious dogma. The skeptic argues for a better way of finding answers without trying to fill the answer with a non answer. I don't think anyone would point to crazy religious or non-religious leaders and call them the beacons of reason or rationality.
